One of the most common questions we get asked when someone is about to rent a dumpster is;
Can I put _____ in the dumpster?
The whole purpose of you renting a roll-off container is to dispose of;

- Household Trash
- Yard Debris
- Furniture or Appliances

So of course you need to know that your refuse is acceptable. There are three categories of materials.
- Acceptable Materials - Items that typically can go into any roll-off bin.
- Surcharge Materials- Items that can go into a roll-off dumpster for an extra fee.
- Prohibited Materials - Items that can never go into a roll-off
What Materials Are Acceptable to Be Put Into a Dumpster?
Dumpster rental includes disposal of your garbage, trash, or junk at the landfill, transfer station, or commercial recycling center. So any of these materials which can be disposed of in a one of those locations are perfectly acceptable;
- Construction Debris; such as lumber, sheetrock, bathroom tile, pressure-treated wood, carpeting, and pallets
- Demolition Debris
- Roofing Debris
- Household Waste
- Yard Debris; such as grass clippings, branches, tree limbs, and brush
- Home Furniture; such as a couches, tables, and chairs
- Business Furniture; such as a desks, work stations, and conference tables
- Old toys, books, clothes, or any household possessions
- Most Electronics; including microwaves, radios, and toasters
- Most Appliances; including water heaters, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, and stoves
- Metal; household items made of metal or scrap metal
What Items Can Be Put In A Roll-Off Dumpster For An Additional Fee?
Federal and State governments have rules on certain items which should be recycled or otherwise disposed of outside of a landfill. These items can go into a dumpster, but either the landfill and transfer stations charge extra for them or Flex Dumpster staff have to manually remove them from the trash dumpster before going to the landfill. These items which can go in a roll-off dumpster for an additional fee are;
- Televisions (TVs) and Computer monitors
- Automobile or truck tires
- Appliances that contain Freon; including Refrigerators, Window Air Conditioners, and Dehumidifiers
- Mattresses

What Items Are Prohibited From Being Placed In a Roll-Off Dumpster?
Because of Federal or State Regulations concerning recycling rules or handling of hazardous materials there are certain items or classes of materials which are absolutely prohibited from being placed in a dumpster. Most of these are common sense, if it is toxic, burns, or explodes, you have to find another solution for removal. These items include;
- Highly Flammable items; including gasoline, propane, butane, and aerosols
- Regulated toxic materials; including asbestos, industrial waste, biological waste, pesticides, and liquid paint
- Corrosive materials; such as vehicle batteries, or acids
- Clean Fill; Concrete, Dirt, Sod, and Sand of any quantity over 1 yard of materials require separate clean fill dumpsters and can not be mixed with other refuse. If you have those materials in any significant quantity, you should find a designated clean fill service.
